» PUSHKAR FAIR INTRODUCTION
 [Camel In Pushkar Fair] The Pushkar Camel Fair is one of the largest in India and the only one of its kind in the entire world. During the fair, Lakhs of people from rural India flock to Pushkar, along with Camel and Cattle for several days of live stock trading, horse dealing, pilgrimage and religious festival.
This small town, becomes a cultural phenomenon when colourfully dressed devotees, musicians, acrobats, folk dancers, traders, comedians, sadhus and tourists reach here during Pushkar fair. According to Hindu chronology, it takes place in the month of Kartika (October or November) beginning on ashtmi 8th day of Lunar Calendar and continues till full moon (Poornima). The Camel and Cattle trading is at its peak during the first half of festival period. During the later half, religious activities dominate the scenario. Devotees take dips in the holy "Sarovar" lake, as the sacred water is known to bestow salvation.
This small town is transformed into a spectacular fair ground, as rows of make shift stalls display an entire range of objects of art to daily utility stuff. Decoration items for Cattle, Camel and women, everything is sold together. Small handicraft items are the best bargain for buying souvenir. The Camel and Horse races have crowds to cheer. Camel judging competitions are Quite popular with animal lovers. Each evening brings different folk dances and music of Rajasthan, performers delivering live shows to the roaring and applauding crowds. |

» HISTORICAL VIEW OF PUSHKAR FAIR
 [Travelling To Pushkar Fair] History of Pushkar Festival lies in the Hindu scriptures. Pushkar itself is one of the five holy cities mentioned in the Hindu scriptures. The most remarkable thing about Pushkar is that the land houses one of the only two temples dedicated to Lord Brahma in India. Apart from that the city also has nearly 400 temples.
Popular belief is that on the day of Poornima (full moon night) in the month of Karthika, all the 330 million deities of Hinduism remain present in the lake of Pushkar. So hundreds and thousands of devotees look forward to taking a dip in the lake. A dip in the lake on this day implies washing away the sins. The water of the lake is believed to have healing properties.
A cattle fair is held in conjunction with the holy festival. Hundreds of shops sell camels, horses, bulls, cows and much more. This is an ideal example of how the religious faith and commercial interest of the human society come together. In this way Pushkar fair embodies the true spirit of India. |

Shopping is a delightful experience in Pushkar fair, wide range of Handicraft items are displayed on road side stalls. A mystifying variety of Souvenirs, curios, and trinkets are up for sale. Pushkar occupies an important place in Rajasthan as a source of souvenirs. The beads , bangles, embroidered shoes, clothes, shiny glass, brass utensils, belts and many more are on a display. Major shopping areas in Pushkar are Sarafa Bazar, Baza Bazar and Kedalganj bazaar. |

» CELEBRATION OF PUSHKAR FAIR
 [Camel Selling In Pushkar Fair] Dance music and colorful shops spring up during this fair. Also on sale are mouth-watering traditional delicacies. Colorfully attired village folk enhance the fun of the occasion.
A host of cultural event against the backdrop of this pretty setting is also organized including attractive puppet shows. Cattle auction and camel races are also a part of the festivities.

» ACCOMMODATION IN PUSHKAR During the special occasion of the Pushkar Fair, accommodation is arranged in special tents in a tourist village, which is self-sufficient and specially designed to complement the natural beauty of the site. The village has a coffee shop and dining hall that can cater to 1,500 guests at a time. The village is arranged on blocks of tents, each with its own identity, named after the famous dances of Rajasthan. The village also has huts with attached western style toilets and running water.
Besides this village, Pushkar also has some hotels/resorts. However, it is sometimes difficult to find accommodation in Pushkar, especially if you arrive late in the day. Most hotels are nothing fancy, but they are generally clean and freshly white-washed. |
