The district is situated in the south-eastern part of Rajasthan. It is bound in the north by Tonk, in the west by Bhilwara and on the south-west by Chittorgarh districts. The river Chambal forms the southern and eastern boundaries separating the Bundi and Kota territories. The southern tehsils of Bundi forms a wedge between Bhilwara and Kota and also touches Chittorgarh district.

Chhatris Of The Bundi Rulers, Rajasthan
[Chhatris Of The Bundi Rulers]
The area of Bundi came under the Chauhan rulers in the 12th century. Bundi got its name from Bunda, one of its former rulers. In 1624, Emperor Jahangir, the great Mughal ruler, partitioned Bundi and made Kota an independent state. Bundi became an independent state under British rule, then amalgamated in Rajasthan when India gained independence in 1947. Bundi and Kota are on the two side of Chambal river.

Interesting monuments in Bundi including impressive medieval forts, palaces, havelis, temples with beautiful stone idols and chattris with carved pillars. Bundi is known for its palaces, baolis (step water tanks) and water tanks. There is a picturesque lake in the heart of the town. Bundi is famous for its Kajli-teej festival. This annual festival is held in July–August.

» FESTIVALS & FAIRS IN BUNDI

  • Kajli Teej : Teej festival, the celebration of the monsoons (July-Aug), is celebrated all over the state with each region having its own unique touch. Kajli Teej of Bundi is different in several ways-while Teej is celebrated on the third day of the month of Shravana, in Bundi it is celebrated on the third day of the month of Bhadra. The festival starts with the procession of goddess Teej in a decorated palanquin from the beautiful Naval Sagar. It passes through the main bazaars and terminates at Azad Park. The procession has decorated elephants, camels, bands, performing artists and colourfully dressed people.

    This is the time to renew the ties of fidelity for married couples in Rajasthan, and special sweetmeats, and swing rides are characteristic of it. The people who gather here from surrounding areas also get to watch and participate in the cultural programmes that are organised in the evenings. It provides a very good chance to see performances by local artists from Hadoti region.

  • Taragarh Fort In Bundi, Rajasthan

    The Taragarh Fort : Taragarh means Star Fort. This fort also known as Bundi Fort. This majestic fort was built in 1345. It is located on top of a hill amidst green surroundings.

  • Garh Palace (Chatramahal, Ratan Daulat and Badal Mahal) : These palaces are part of Garh Palace. The main attraction is rooms and galleries full of murals of Bundi Miniature Paintings. The colour schemes of these paintings are red, golden and blue. Although these palaces are private property of the Maharaja, but at present open for visitors by paying some entrance fee.

  • Ratan Daulat : This remarkable structure that comprises of a stable for nine horses and a Hatia Pol was built by Rao Raja Ratan Singh.

  • Shikar Burj : It is a hunting lodge along Jait Sagar lake.

  • Sukh Mahal : A magnificient summer palace on the Sukh Mahal Lake amid the lush surroundings of a beautiful garden. An underground tunnel is believed to run from the Sukh Mahal to the old palace.

  • Eighty Four Pillared Cenotaph : This remarkably well constructed memorial was erected by Rao Raja Anirudh Singh in memory of his foster brother. This single cenotaph has 84 pillars with a Shiva Lingam. No doubt this cenotaph is unique and wonderful.

  • Nawal Sagar : Near the Bundi palace is the artificial lake of- Nawal Sagar where a shrine is dedicated to Varuna, the Aryan god of water is locate at the centre.

    The Bundi Palace : The marvelous structure located adjoining the Taragarh Fort atop the hill, exhibits the extraordinary craftsmanship of the place. The awe-inspiring traditional murals are characteristic of the splendor and opulence of the royal dwellers of this palace. Chitrashala is a part of the Bundi Palace and consists of an art gallery or pavilion that exhibits miniature colorful murals depicting scenes from the Ragmala and Raaslila-the story of Radha-Krishna.

  • Phool Sagar : The PHOOL SAGAR is an excellent and well-planned structure as also the decoration of this Rajput edifice, and the same beauty lies in the massive TARAGARH. This little town has yet retained a medieval atmosphere. Bundi is not exactly a tourist tramping ground but never the less, this adds on to its appeal with a curiosity to explore it. The look of the town has a Bluish hue same as that of Jodhpur. With no renovating desire, the art is in a crumbling state of disrepair. The original history claims that Bundi was once the capital of the great HADOTI KINGDOM. But then KOTA in 1624 was separated as an independent state and thus the journey of Bundi downfall started. A prominent author approached BUNDI, He came, He saw and He created RUDYARD KIPLING's inspiration took birth in the state of Bundi and so inspired was he by the enchanting set up that he captured its images and applied them to his works.

  • Sar Bagh : SAR BAGH has 66 royal cenotaphs. Step wells (Bawari) are another prominent highlights of Bundi, these served as water reservoirs in the months of summers, there were over 50 wells but many of them had to suffer the ravages of the time. The CHHATAR MAHAL is adorned with beautiful wall paintings of the famous Bundi School. And so are the ZANANA MAHAL (palace for the queens) and BADAL MAHAL.

» EXCURSION OF BUNDI

  • Jait Sagar Lake (3 Km) : A picturesque lake cradled in the hills; built by Jaita Meena.The swirling fountain at night is a visual delight.

  • Rameshwaram (20 km) : The cave temple of Lord Shiva surrounded by the Aravalli ranges. An ideal picnic spot as well.

  • Ramgarh (45 km) : The Ramgarh Sanctuary is located on the Nainwa road. You require permission of the State Forest Department before visiting sanctuary.

  • Keshavraipatan (45 km) : It is an ancient city famous for the temple of Keshavraiji(Vishnu). The architecture and sculpture at this temple is unique. It was constructed in the year 1601 A.D. by Maharaja Shartusal of Bundi. A famous Jain Temple is also there.

  • Indragarh (77 km) : The Indragarh Fort and the nearby palaces are famous for the temples of Mother Goddess Kali and Kamleshwar. The Palace is also famous for wall paintings.

  • Dugari (65 km) : There is a fort which houses Ram Mandir. You can view murals and paintings on the walls here.

  • Talwas (53 km) : A magnificent for built by the ruler Ajit Singh. A temple of Dhooleshwar Mahadev and a picturesque waterfall adjoining the fort are worth a visit. The beautiful Ratna Sagar Lake is close by and is a haven for fauna like bear and deer during the monsoon.

  • Menal(70 Km) : The Menal River runs over a bed of granite slabs and plunges into a cavernous 122 metres deep gorge. On the other side of the broken wall is the temple complex with fascinating carvings on the walls of the shrine that depict various Hindu deities. It is located on the Chittaurgarh-Bundi road.

  • Bijolia (50 km) : An ancient fort and the city of Bijolia is situated on the Bundi- Chittaurgarh road.
    A high paved courtyard on the side of the fort has a temple of Lord Shiva in its centre with an image of Lord Ganesha standing as a guardian at the entrance.

In main Bazaar, cotton carpets at Nainwais, famous Kota paintings and Kota doria saries in Kota, Stone statue art and wooden toys in Jhalawar, and lac ki churi are what one can shop.
